Early Kick Detection (EKD)

Background

Early Kick Detection (EKD) system is one of the most important focus processes to prevent Loss of Well Control incidents in different parts of the world. Early impact detection (EKD) is one of the most important areas for improving well control safety, increasing the efficiency of drilling operations and reducing NPT time. The need for earlier, more accurate and more reliable kick detection has become increasingly important in a wide range of drilling operations, especially in formations with a narrow window of drilling fluid weight. In order to accomplish this, it is important to start measuring the indicators that have the greatest impact. In general, in the identification of Kick, the evaluation of two risk-based key performance indicators (KPI) is suggested: (1) how long it takes to positively identify a kick, (2) and how long it takes to respond to a kick once the identification is made. These KPIs are the Kick Detection Volume (KDV) and the Kick Response Time (KRT) respectively. They provide the ability to directly measure kick detection and management approaches. A third metric, the Drilling Mode Kick Frequency (DMKF), while not a performance indicator, is critical to help determine the point at which drilling operation kicks are most likely to occur and thereby to aid in the evaluation of kick detection methodologies. Applying the (EKD) system provides the ability to directly measure approaches to Kick detection and its management.

Applications

  • Kick/Loss early warning in Connection/Tripping/Drilling/Cementing operations
  • Accurate and continuous quantitative measurement of flow and density in real-time
  • Pore pressure gradient monitoring and control monitoring of ECD
  • Monitoring and preventing wash outs of pipes and fishing operations
  • Stand-alone usability without the need for a surface logging unit
  • Ability to install an explosion-proof display with alarm setting in the drilling room, company man and the head of the device
  • Ability to send online with standard drilling formats to third party systems
  • Avoiding unpredictable Kick/Loss movement in sections with narrow margins of mud weight
  • Immediate intervention in Kick/Loss control

Benefits

  • Minimizing non-productive time (NPT)
  • Unambiguous alerts for the driller, company man, and the rig boss for quick decision making
  • High Accuracy & High Precision in the instantaneous measurement of Loss/Influx with an accuracy of 0.006 (bbl) and changes in the weight of the return fluid with an accuracy of 0.012 (pcf).
  • Reducing the risk of reading and quick response by quantitative and absolute measurement of flow in and out (Flow In/Out) of the well fluid in real-time to reduce calculation errors.
  • Reducing the risk of reading with real-time measurement of the weight of the returned fluid (Mud Weight Out) in the quick detection of Gas-Cut Mud to reduce calculation errors.
